With the start of the fourth quarter, US large cap stocks finally kicked out of their multi-week trading ranges, volatility spiked, important sectors sliced below support levels and bonds rallied. In other words, it was a classic shake, rattle and roll, risk-off type of trading day.
After a weak close to the month of September and thus the third quarter on Tuesday, stocks followed through on the downside on Wednesday as the quarter-start rally that investors had gotten used to in recent years failed to materialize, leaving some perma-bulls standing around the trading floor empty-handed.
